The Torugart pass is a part of the Tien Shan. It links Kyrgyzstan and China, and allocated on the Naryn region border (Kyrgyzstan) and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region (China). The height of the pass is 3752 meters. In the territory of Kyrgyzstan, near the Torugart lake Chatyr-Kel.
There is one of the two main checkpoints of crossing the Kyrgyz-Chinese border Torugart-road (second – Irkeshtam-road). Currently, there are many Hiking tours spread through this way along the Great silk road.
It should be noted that the Bishkek-Torugart highway, is quite narrow in some parts, while in winter driving it is often closed due to snowfall and avalanches.
From China the torugurat customhouse is in 110 km from the pass. Distance from the pass to Urumqi 1630 km and -170 km Artush and Kashgar is about 165 km.
Before the opening of the Irkeshtam checkpoint -road in 2002, the Torugart was the only place through which travelers could cross the Kyrgyz-Chinese border.
Now, the border pass is technically is opened only for citizens of Kyrgyzstan and China, and the tourists from the other countries can cross it only with the permit of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Urumqi. But they should meet the representative firms at the border.
Foreigners are prohibited to travel to China with their own transport, t except as permission for this had been obtained in two months before crossing the border (it costs quite expensive).
In addition, travelers should know that the crossing point got the second class. In this regard, at the border there are no any conveniences and it is controlled by the special laws, for example, it is closed on weekends and holidays.
